Serological Markers for Early Detection of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most frequent tumors in Korea and the prognosis of HCC is very poor without early detection. It has been recommended that high-risk patients such as hepatitis B carriers and patients with liver cirrhosis should be regularly screened for HCC through liver ultrasonography (USG) and serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) measurement. But liver USG and serum AFP have various limitations to detect early HCC. Globally, a lot of novel serological markers of HCC have been investigated and developed. In Korea, results of studies on the Protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) and Lens culianris agglutinin-reactive AFP (AFP-L3), novel serological markers of HCC have been reported since 1990. But These new serological markers of HCC are not known to the primary care physicians in Korea. We reviwed results of studies on and clinical utilities of AFP, PIVKA-II and AFP-L3, serological markers of HCC that have been researched actively in Korea.
